I have searched my past posts looking for the post where I wrote about a sermon we had at church. I can't find it. I have looked and looked and all I can figure is this: I wrote it in my mind one night, and just thought I sat down and put it to the blog waves. Guess I need to get more blond highlights put in my hair!
The sermon came on a Sunday after Jan. 1st of this year. It was brought by one of our previous ministers, who our congregation hired as a "green horn". He was fresh out of college and still hadn't reached full puberty. I was taking classes way down in Mexico while living with a host family, and I think I still have the letter mom sent telling me about Rick. I think at that point she was hoping for a preacher son-in-law..........I knew she was dreaming! Anyway, on this recent Sunday, I was scheduled to sing for both services. Rick spoke. But through it all I know God spoke. He used Rick to speak loud and clear and directly to my heart. The focus of the sermon was on "A Leap of Faith". I can't tell you everything that Rick said. I wish I could. I found myself so into the sermon.....both services. I know that the picture on the screen was a guy jumping from an airplane. A Leap of Faith.....the parachute will open.
It was at the end of the sermon (that time when people are restless, needing a bathroom, putting away Bibles, books, and waking children), and Rick asked for the congregation to sit quietly. Just sit quietly and listen to what God would say. Listen to where God needed them to take a leap of faith. Listen to the opening of the door God wanted you to follow. I don't care much for those moments in the sermon. Do you really hear God's voice or is it your own wish or desire that you repeat to yourself? (You know, I think some of us Church or Christ people think we don't need God to speak to us, or if we did hear a voice, we would be some weirdo because hmmmm we "just don't do that. Other religions do") I am convinced that it is the voice of God. Sometimes it just happens to be what I want. This time I did as Rick requested. I with some hesitation repeated the prayer along with him. And then I sat and without a moment's loss I heard the voice. What I heard was something that I did NOT want!! I had told several people that I was in no way interested in leaping into that situation!!! I had been working 7 years (Hmmm does anyone see a Biblical number there) to get my life into a routine, back to a normal, a comfortable life. I had decided that I needed to keep myself where I was in life. "It is my calling". I was already shaking up things by taking on a job at McMurry. I of course sat through second service and the same thing happened.
I am taking that leap of faith. I am trusting God that there is a parachute to catch me when I stumble and fall. I am trusting God that the winds won't blow me and the parachute too far off course. I know that there will be rough winds, places NOT to land, and branches to get tangled up in. I don't expect perfect landings, and I do expect many a butterfly filled stomach. BUT..........I will leap. I will trust God since it was His voice (remember I had said NO) that lead me. I will be leaving my comfortable little world for the last 27 years. I will be trading my classroom key for another. Next year I will be the counselor at the Middle School where I am now a teacher. I am nervous.......I don't do heights well, much less just jump off them.

The Virus that lives up to its name!
When I was younger there was a commercial for "Roto Rooter" ( I think that is what you called it). They advertised for pipe and drain cleanings. I could even sing the jingle. As I grew older(more mature), I heard some jokes accordingly about visits to the doctor etc. Tony "roto-rooted" his little house a few weeks ago. The smell was disgusting, and he was a real mess (pun intended). This weekend I was privileged to experience the Roto Virus. My son had a visit with the Roto Virus last weekend. And it does live up to its name. So... what did I learn? (IF you have a weak stomach stop here! If you are adventurous, then read on!)
#1. This virus can come upon you as quickly as a tree root can capture the main pipe. One minute you are happy as a lark and 30 minutes later you are shaking with a temp. of 103. The shaking for me was close to that of the jack hammer. Had I known I was sick Fri. afternoon, I might have breathed heavier on a couple of kids!
#2. If you are attacked by this well named virus............use a bathroom where you would like to do some redecorating. The wall paper will peel off easily or the paint will just chip off after a few "runs" through the virus. When you find energy...start the redecorating.
#3. Phenogren is your friend. Saturday my mom hurriedly drove me to the doctor's office so we could sit in the freezer section waiting to be seen. Hmmmm glad I brought sweaters and a blanket. He pronounced me definitely "roto-ing" and said, "Well, the only thing I can do is to give you a shot to stop the nausea." Fine, sign me up. I will try anything...since I had been sleeping on my back since Fri. afternoon because turning stirred up the nausea. Well............ they warned me it would hurt, but the poor nurse forgot to tell me she would be shooting a 4 course dinner with a main course of T-Bone steak through that tiny needle into my big behind. She did promise quick results..............don't remember getting into the house.
#4. Drink water...........water and more water. Anything else is like adding Draino to the situation.
#5. My mom is a saint!!! Not only was I sick, but so was my precious grandmother. So, she and my aunt worked their own little home health care business. Mom stayed at my house for 2 nights. She checked me every two hours, remembered if it was time for Motrin or Tylenol, made me sip water and sprite. Allowed me to just lay there! Allowed me to rest and recuperate. She disinfected, she did my shopping, the bathing, the taking to church, the hauling to and fro. She did it all. She is wonderful! I don't need a husband.........I have Mom, and Kauy (who would come in when "Hysti" was gone and tell me to sip) and Makaley (who would come in with a mask on to check my temp.) And I have Dad who took the kids when I needed them out of the house!
#6. You won't hear the words "roto-rooter" without that sick feeling coming over you! All the pipes and drains are sure to be cleared. Clogs will go to running the other direction !!
It's my life.........and that is all that was stuck to me this weekend!

It was a GOOD ONE!
Last night we had a few moments of bad weather. In the middle of it, Tony calls to rib me a little. My daughter (like her mother in younger years) is horrified of bad weather. She doesn't know the area well enough to know that you figure in direction of the storm's movemen, traveling speed, and distance we are from towns before you begin to panic. We were fine until they just blurted out "We just received a call of a possible funnel on Southwest DR." before they even checked it out. I understand we live two blocks away...I understand that Southwest Dr. is longer than the length of my house...but she doesn't. SO...we head to the closet (well, they do..I went outside to listen for sounds, watch the cloud and breathe!) Tony was just giving me a hard time. I let him know he is often more the pain than she is. He is male. Did he understand what I was saying? NO!!!!
At about 7PM I call to tell him we were still at home, and he said he had just pulled up in the driveway. Of course he jacked with Makaley, but told her he loved her etc. Like I said...he can be a pain too. Now, before we go on, you must understand two things : I have two security cameras on my house with a monitor in the kitchen/living area, and when it rains really hard, really fast, the street beside my house will flood and the water goes way up over the curb. Cars will continue to drive through it..because. So, now...anyway....Kauy and I are in the kitchen getting him a drink, and Tony and Makaley are not far away, but can not see the monitor. Kauy runs to the monitor and yells..."oh my goodness, Eddie(our 29 yr. old hang ten surfing dude neighbor) has his surf board out there in the street and is riding the car waves." Tony goes flying out the front door to watch. BUT...in the kitchen Kauy is yelling..."Gotch ya!" It was all too funny. I mean I was laughing at Mr. "I am on top of it". And you ask: "Why would Tony believe that line?" Well, you would need to know Eddie. I have to go over next door and ask IF Kauy can come home some afternoons because they get outside and play ball, mow, wash cars, wrestle, chase, etc. We own a fish because of Eddie. Poor Rachel she is married to a kid at heart. And I gave birth to one. Not to mention the one I date.
Just so you know. I am smiling while writing this. And you bet....Kauy was soooo proud of himself.

Stuck!
I am so "stuck to my life" that I am not able to sit here and impart great words of wisdom, or tell you stories of my precious children...........so while I am "stickin' with my life" just stick with me.
I love you for checking on me! Remember.........I am a dash. Right now I am dashing around like crazy. I will be so excited when summer gets here and this job of mine doesn't interfere with my posting a blog.
I promise to make it worth the wait!

Me...a dash?
You Are a Dash
Your life is fast paced and varied. You are realistic, down to earth, and very honest. You're often busy doing something interesting, and what you do changes quickly. You have many facets to your personality, and you connect them together well.
You have a ton of interests. While some of them are a bit offbeat, they all tie together well.
Your friends rely on you to bring novelty and excitement to their lives.(And while you're the most interesting person they know, they can't help feeling like they don't know you well.)
You excel in: Anything to do with money.
You get along best with: the Exclamation Point.
Alrighty then. The previous thought is brought to you from a test I took on my cousin Brandi's blog. And I am the above...really? I do have a few thoughts here.
I am a dash only because the questions were so that I could have answered them using two of the choices, but I could only actually choose one. I am certainly a dash because of the first sentence. If you know me........then you agree. The sentence about many facets of my personality does NOT mean I have multiple-personalities. I may talk to myself (and you do too..admit it!), but I don't answer myself....well at least not yet.
I am certain that those of you who know me agree with all of the comments UNTIL......"You excel in...." Hello..I am the person who sank a butt load of money into the stock market and two months later it started falling. That is NOT my definition of excelling. I thought excel meant to go forward quickly. For some reason I don't find me excelling in the financial area. I am still working....will continue to work although retirement is only 2 years away for a Texas Teacher who was grandfathered in on the 80 year thing. Long story there. Maybe it means I excel in spending the money! Hey, think about it...I blow money out the exhaust system of my car daily! If you want to get down to it, I blow money from one end of my body to the other. My closet "excels in a lot to do with money" so.................
Now, who qualifies as an exclamation mark? Do you think in a million years I could get Tony to take this test? Probably not. I figure he is a period. That is it.....end of discussion, there is no more to it, that is how I see it. I figure a period is someone who is very opinionated. Hmmm well, that would be he! (that is proper grammar ya know)
Anne is a a colon; Brandi is a comma.............non of them are a question mark, and I get along very well with them. They round out the punctuation of my life nicely. We all get along just fine. So I ask again.........Who is an exclamation mark?
What punctuation mark ARE you? Are you my exclamation mark?

A Toast To Aunt Traci
I don't believe that I have told you about our little excitement when we were in Dallas for LTC the weekend of Easter. It must be told so that you can follow the next part to the story.
LTC is a weekend where kids from all over the state meet in a variety of places and compete for medals in Leadership. The main event is the Bible Bowl where the kids have studied a book of the Bible (I Samuel this year) and they go for 4 rounds of tough questions with 3 other team mates against a huge number of students. There were 75 questions this year, and they were tough. There is also competition drama, chorus, puppets, song leading, scripture reading, art and sign language. Lots to do...lots of kids...lots or tempers...lots of walking and not much to eat around there. So, we decided to let the "computer" (Audry because she is audible) guide us to the nearest Jack In the Box. I now laugh at that name, because I have thought how appropriate that was for the incident that occurred while we were there. Upon arriving, we noticed a "young lady" in short shorts....let me stop and say that I wish my mom could draw this picture for you. You see, her shorts were so short, that there was no need for the button or the zipper. They were so short and she was so "stocky" that the button and bottom of the zipper were about to touch, AND my mom once again was able to give her "crack shorts" sermon ....along with "you are just a walking advertisement" speech (the speech about the "valley of the bosom"). Well, we decided against going in; we opted for the drive through. Hmm do you know that they have to actually cook some things so they sent us to the front to wait. It is during this "waiting" that my children witness their first "corner girl" Yep, the one with the shorts and the "Frazzle Rock" ponytail hair do. We saw the exchange of street corner medication go down, explained the use of a flask;we heard the phone call, and watched the sign language shot at passing cars. Quietest moment we had experienced all day. Both kids were in shock. Best part was when Kauy asked, "Why did that young girl get in the fancy car with the old man? He didn't look like her dad." Of course Hysti tried to help, but the answer about her helping serve dinner cracked me up. Hello, she WAS dinner. So.....we learn lesson #365 for the year.
On to this weekend in Lubbock. After Makaley had finished her competition at the Sunset Bible Bowl, we chose to go eat at Spanky's. They have the BEST Cheese sticks, and fried zucchini and it is this two story little joint that is always busy! After a delicious fried dinner, we headed to the loop to get out of town. Of course, we hit a detour and ended up passing a local bar. (Well, we didn't know that at the time. ) This car just started whipping out backwards into our lane. Brakes go on. We slam forward; other car head out...and we see a body rolling on the pavement to get out of the way of the car's tires. The body jumps up shouting and begins throwing rocks at the car. Once again....quietest moment in the day. AND Hysti gives her lesson about "the problems that crept into our lives when alcohol was allowed so freely in our cities". Hmmm... Lesson #400 plus for the year.
I laugh....both incidents occurred while on a trip for Bible Bowl. Both trips allowed me to teach life lessons in a unique way. May I say that I think my kids are very visual learners! Both trips were in Hysti's car WITH Aunt Traci driving!!!!!
I laugh even harder now as I remember Kauy sitting at the restaurant and the following scene takes place:
K: "KK, can I have a piece of your toast?"
M: "Sure, Kauy"
Kauy takes one bite. Standing, he holds the piece of toast high in the air by the bottom corner (you know how they cut Texas Toast in half from corner to corner..like a triangle?)
K: " And so, a toast to our Aunt Traci!" "Cheers!" I died laughing. What a precious play on words.
That pretty much covers both trips with Aunt Traci. I love my life so I will stick with it! And can't wait to be "On the Road Again" with Aunt Traci.
Cheers to you!

No ooshy gooshy stuff
Okay, that was fun.....and interesting. Last night was the last of my evening classes at McMurry University. Wow, time flew by quickly. And now, I must give them a grade. I hate doing that. Yes, I know...I do that daily with my 6th graders, but I KNOW 6th graders. I can read them fairly well. I know IF they did their work, IF they were REALLY listening, IF they put forth much effort. Adults, the first two are IF's and the last one I can determine.
My mom called to ask how it went last night. Besides my own children going with me (eating a whole chocolate bar each, and finger painting with us), it went well. Until the end. The end of class. The end of the relationships started with some of these students. That's all folks! D.C. al final! And you know what..........when college kids leave the room for the last time, nobody hugs your neck and tells you all this ooshy gooshy stuff. Nobody says "you are my favorite teacher" (this year). Nobody hands you a gift of thanks, and some don't even say thanks. They just hand in the final and walk out the door. That's it. And there the teacher sits. Wondering...Did they learn what I wanted them to grasp. Did they retain any of what I handed to them? Did they leave thinking "That was worth my 3 hours tuition money"? Did they recommend this class to others? OR...Did they just hand in the final and toss 16, 3 hour class sessions into the trash. And so...I sat and wondered. Then realized that I had given them what I possessed this semester. I realized that I saw faces change, lights come on, and leaps of faith happening in that room on a regular basis. I realized that they ARE just like my 6th graders in some ways after all. They like the rest of us need to be reassured, loved and needed. Hopefully amid all the books, handouts, games, and other activities....that was addressed also. And all without the ooshy gooshy stuff.

Happy Birthday Traci
Today is May 1st. Hmmmmm there is absolutely nothing more important today(not even TAKS) than my sister's birthday!!!! (Well, I did go to the zoo with Kauy). When Traci was born, I had strong emotions about the invasion of "my world according to Trina". I do not remember, but have been told that at one point I asked my precious great-grandmother to flush her down the toilet. Yep....That toilet took things down and they NEVER came back. I also have been told that Traci had a fever once(once..ha..she was the queen of tonsillitis) and I was asked how high her fever was. My response: "about that high, and gave a measurement with my tiny fingers. I learned very early on that Traci was going to be the "spunkier" one of us in some ways. Vacation time was meant for her. She was always small enough to climb into the back of the truck and drag out the cooking supplies when we camped. She was also small enough to put them back in. I supervised. I discovered somewhere around the age (my age) of 11 that Traci had an aversion to the feel of raw chicken. Just for grins....I would chase her with the whole raw chicken just before putting it in the pot to cook. She soon began to develop some very strong personality traits. She was a "in charge" kind of person. Fine with me....pumping gas on vacation would mess up my nails. She also quickly became the "I'll get you back when you least expect it" kind of sister. Like the time I was eating one of her fruity powder (kind of like pixie sticks). She had put the strawberry container with the bubble bath powder in the same spot as her candy. I "hated" getting my mouth washed out with soap! Especially when I hadn't said the wrong word. We both played the piano, marched in the band, played 42, and worked through 4-H together. At one point, our eye doctor called to tell my mom that "the twins" contacts had come in. He wasn't far from the truth. The major difference...she made National Honors Society, and I was just happy to graduate! When we sang with Brandi at the Senior Citizens, we made Traci just play the guitar. No singing. AND, we were both GATA's at ACU. I was in the Big Purple as was she; I was the torch for the Olympic song, and she was the twirler.
By 30, our parents decided that the "twins" were staying sisters(at their house) and no man would come between us. That did change!
Let me bore you a little more here: You see, I was dating a guy (but NOT seriously) and I met this tall handsome cowboy with a beat up old ranch truck. Just what my sister ordered. I called her to tell her I had found her man! She wanted a cowboy since she couldn't have George Strait. In the mean time, a friend decided that I needed to go to this little country church to meet this guy who was the song leader. I had no problem with balding guys; he had a great voice, and was "so nice". So...I went to "worship the Lord" with my friend. Left there giving the blessing that I would go out with him if he wanted to call me. Ha Ha Ha...Long story short...I married the cowboy and Traci married the song leader. She would have hung Kelly and his spurs up on the fence post many times, and I would have sung Tim right out of the house. She married a "me" and I married a "her". (well, something like that).
Today....she is still spunky, a little shorter, and a whole lot smarter. She is the best Aunt you could ever ask for. My kids are sooooo lucky. Makaley shares her middle name (Kauy Lyn would not work for a cowboy!) She still loves me in spite of my pitfalls. She has been through the wringer with me, rescuing me at any hour of the day or night. She is our travel partner when I take the kids out of town for longer than 2 days. She is still my sister but she has become my best friend!
Love you Traci Lyn! Happy Birthday. And I am glad you didn't flush so easily!
